In our last post we mentioned one of the ways you could customize your Xbox 360 skins by painting them. Well I’ve had some emails asking me how to paint a Xbox 360 controller and the case. Well it’s really quite simple and if you follow these steps below you will have your custom skins in no time.
First thing I want to mention is that this will void your warranty so you should stop reading right now if that’s a problem for you. OK now that we’re through with that let’s get on to the real reason you’re here.
What You’ll Need
The first thing you’ll have to do is to take apart your console’s case. A step by step guide can be found here and a guide for the controller can be found here. Now that you have the case and controller in pieces we can move on to the next step.
This is one of the harder and more annoying steps in painting an Xbox 360. First we want to start off with a low grit sand paper to get most of the paint off. It will look bad but here is where you switch to a higher grit sandpaper. You want to work it down until it’s nice and uniform and there is no more imperfections left. After you’re done with that you need to wash off all the pieces. Don’t use any soap, just water.
Priming and Painting
Here’s where we actually get into the painting. Apply the first coat of primer and wait an hour. Then use your highest grit paper and do some very very light wet sanding. Let it dry completely (make sure to leave it in a clean dry place or bad things will happen) and repeat the above steps again. Once it has thoroughly dried, apply the first layer of paint. Repeat the wet sanding method again two more times for a total of 3 coats of paint.
Now that it has had time to dry (give it a few hours to a day), you can finish with the clear acrylic coat. You will use three coats again and sand between each one except on the last. You can sand on the last if you have a very high grit paper (around 2000) but it’s not really necessary. Be very careful with this step or you will ruin the whole thing and have to start all over.
Hopefully now you have a nice new shiny custom Xbox 360 skin you can show off and be the envy of all your friends. Of course if it doesn’t come out perfect the first time don’t fret, we all have messed up a few cases and it’s not like you can’t just start over.
